It was an ordinary day at Mas Torrencito, that lost paradise where dogs were lords and masters, and humans were only there to serve them and enjoy their company. A “trastor” in Mastorrencito…
It was five o’clock in the morning and, surprisingly, everything was quiet. A rare, almost miraculous peace that allowed me to enjoy my coffee while the dogs were waking up. We were expecting only three customers that day, and they would arrive late, around 7:00 pm. Nothing foreshadowed the chaos that was to come.
I was organizing some things when the phone rang. It was my neighbor. And that’s when it all started.
-Hey, there’s a lady out here. She’s very nervous. She says she doesn’t know how to get in.
-What do you mean, he can’t get in? -I asked, frowning.
-That’s what he told me. He’s in the car and won’t come out. What do I do?
-Give her the code, man. I’ll be down in a moment to get it.
-Okay, but she’s kind of hysterical. I’ll let you know.
With a sigh, I prepared myself for what seemed to be one of those stories that later end up as an anecdote for friends (or so I hoped). I went down to reception, waited a few minutes… and nothing. No one was coming. Something was starting to smell funny (and it wasn’t the dogs). I decided to go out to the parking lot to investigate.
Masto, Maky, Mastitwo and Mamas were already raising a ruckus, barking like crazy towards a car. I approached and asked them to calm down. When I looked inside the vehicle, I understood everything: there she was, with her face unhinged and clinging to the steering wheel as if it was the only thing keeping her alive.
The soap opera begins. A “trastor” in Mastorrencito…
-Are you all right? -I asked, leaning toward the window.
She lowered the window just a few centimeters, as if she was afraid the dogs were going to get inside the car.
-What is this? -How do you allow these dogs to attack customers? 😡
-Excuse me? -Attack? I don’t see anything like that.
-Yes! Don’t you see how they look at me? They want to devour me!
-Have you tried getting out of the car without yelling at them?
She opened her eyes like saucers.
You’re crazy! Close them immediately!
-That’s not going to happen. Dogs are free here. 🐾
-Well, I’m not coming down!
-Well, don’t come down, madam. What do you want me to tell you?
The lady did not move. There she stood, motionless as a statue, while the dogs, now seated, watched her curiously. At last, she seemed to gather courage. She opened the door slowly, as if expecting a pack of wolves to pounce on her. But the dogs only sniffed her with interest, wagging their tails.
-You see? It’s a normal attitude. You are at home. 😊
-This is not normal…” he replied, still trembling.
I decided to ignore the comment and change the subject.
One question, ma’am… When you made the reservation, didn’t you see that we clearly state that this is a dog-friendly accommodation?
-Yes, but I didn’t make any reservations.
🎆 BOMBAZO 🎆 A “trastor” in Mastorrencito…
-What do you mean, you don’t have a reservation? -I asked, incredulous.
-That’s right. I don’t have a reservation. I was just passing by and got curious.
I took a deep breath. This was going to be a long one.
-And from the stories you read, wasn’t it clear to you that there are dogs everywhere here?
Well, yes, but I didn’t think it was that far-fetched.
-What did you think it would be like?
-I don’t know… That they would be more… quiet.
The dogs, as if they understood the comment, let out a bark in unison, almost like a laugh.
-See what I mean?! They want to attack me again!
-Ma’am, all they want is to meet you. What exactly do you want?
-I want to see the house, have a drink and decide whether to stay or not.
I let out an incredulous laugh.
-But if you don’t have a reservation…
-I don’t think they are full. This is lost in the middle of nowhere. I’m sure they have rooms available.
He was right about that, but he wasn’t going to admit it so easily.
-There are rooms left, yes, but this is not a bar or a shopping mall. Here you have to book in advance.
She smirked, ignoring my comment.
-Show me the house, and I’ll tell you if I stay or not.
The tour began. The dogs followed us like an escort, and she kept glancing sideways at them, as if at any moment they were going to jump on her.
-This is the common room. Here the guests have breakfast with the dogs.
-With the dogs in here? Yuck! 🤢
-There are no restricted areas for them here. This is their home.
She grimaced, almost theatrically, as if she was smelling something unpleasant (although everything was spotless).
-What if I want to have breakfast in peace?
-I recommend other accommodation, madam. That is impossible here.
We continued on to one of the rooms. It was simple, cozy and smelled of lavender. But, of course, she found something to criticize.
-I thought it would be more luxurious.
-What part of “rural lodging for dog lovers” sounded like luxury to you?
Before she could respond, one of the dogs jumped on the bed and settled down. She let out a scream worthy of a horror movie.
-This is unacceptable! A dog in bed! 😱
-Dogs are king here. If you don’t like this, I don’t think you’ve come to the right place.
She pursed her lips, furious, but said nothing. Until she blurted out another gem:
-Well, I think I’ll stay. Although it seems expensive for what they offer.
🎇 That’s when I exploded.
-Excuse me, but you have no reservation, you have come unannounced, you have criticized everything you have seen and you still want to negotiate the price. This is not a flea market.
She lifted her chin, haughty.
-Customers are always right.
The dogs reacted. As if they had rehearsed, they all came and sat around her, staring at her. Her face went from arrogance to terror in seconds.
-What are you doing? Get them off me!
-They are not doing anything. They are just waiting.
He tried to back away, but stumbled against the door frame. His breathing was agitated, and I could barely contain my laughter.
-You know what? I don’t think I’m going to stay.
🎉 FINALLY 🎉. A “trastor” in Mastorrencito…
-Good decision.
She almost ran out to her car, but before leaving, she couldn’t resist issuing a threat:
-I’m going to write a negative review. People need to know what kind of place this is.
-Please do. And don’t forget to mention that this is for dog lovers only. 🐕
He climbed into the car, started up with a screech of wheels and disappeared leaving a cloud of dust. The dogs, excited, began barking as if they were celebrating his departure.
-Well done, guys. One down.
Hours later, the real customers arrived. They came with three dogs, huge smiles and a perfect attitude. As soon as they walked in, it was all joy.
-This is paradise. 🥰
-Thank you. It is only for those who understand that the dogs are the most important thing here.
That night, we all toasted together, humans and dogs, celebrating that Mas Torrencito was still a home for true dog lovers. And not for psychopaths with an allergy to wagging tails. 🐾
From Mas Torrencito we wish you a good day and that your dog accompanies you !!!!
