In the 17 years she lived, Manuela, the Golden Retriever who reigned as the soul of Mas Torrencito, touched countless hearts. She was the perfect hostess at the rural house in Girona, where love for pets and humans intertwined in a unique way. But the last three years of her life were special. During that time, Gemma and her dog Shiva arrived as guests and unknowingly lived a story that would forever mark their lives.
This is the story of how Gemma found in Manuela more than a pet: she found a being that transformed her world, even in her last days.
An unexpected encounter
Gemma had never heard of Mas Torrencito until a friend recommended the place. She was looking for something different: a refuge where she could disconnect from routine and share quality time with her dog Shiva. One spring morning, he arrived at the rural house with few expectations and an open heart. What he didn’t know was that this trip would change his life.
When Gemma arrived, she was warmly welcomed by Miguel and Mireia, the owners of the house. But what most caught her attention was the golden figure that appeared in the garden. Manuela, with her 14 years of wisdom and her leisurely gait, approached Gemma as if she had known her all her life. At that moment, Gemma felt something indescribable. It was as if Manuela had chosen her.
Shiva, always full of energy and sometimes a bit surly with other dogs, showed unusual behavior. She approached Manuela cautiously, sniffing her and then sitting down next to her with a calmness Gemma had never seen before. “It’s like she knows who Manuela is,” Gemma thought. And, somehow, she knew, too.
Three years of deep connection. Manuela, Gemma and Shiva
After that first meeting, Mas Torrencito was no longer just a vacation spot for Gemma. It became her second home. Every week or whenever she could, she would load up her car and drive from Barcelona with Shiva to spend a day, a weekend, or any possible time with Manuela.
Manuela, although she no longer had the energy of her youth, was still the soul of the place. Gemma would always find her in her favorite corner of the garden, enjoying the sun and the breeze. Often she would sit by her side, simply petting her, while Shiva explored the surroundings or lay nearby. In those quiet moments, Gemma felt something she rarely found in the city: peace.
Manuela seemed to know. With her calm gaze and elegant demeanor, she gave the impression that she understood everything. Gemma’s problems, her joys, her fears… Everything was diluted in the presence of that Golden Retriever who, without saying a word, transmitted more love and understanding than any human.
To Shiva, Manuela became a silent teacher. Although she was much younger and full of energy, she seemed to know instinctively when to stay still by her side and when to encourage her with gentle play. The two created a special bond that mirrored the love Gemma also felt for Manuela.
The weight of time. Manuela, Gemma and Shiva
As the months passed, Manuela showed more and more signs of aging. Her gait became slower, and her naps were longer. Although she was still the hostess of Mas Torrencito, time does not forgive, not even the purest of souls.
Gemma could feel it, and with each visit, her love for Manuela grew. She knew the moments were increasingly precious, and she wasn’t willing to waste any of them. So, in the last years of Manuela’s life, Gemma became a constant presence. It didn’t matter the day or the hour; she always found a way to be there.
Miguel and Mireia watched with gratitude and emotion as Gemma devoted herself to Manuela. “It’s as if she had known her all her life,” said Miguel, surprised by the intensity of that connection. Although it had only been three years, it seemed that Gemma and Manuela were destined to meet.
The last goodbye. Manuela, Gemma and Shiva
The day came that Gemma had always dreaded. A call from Miguel informed her that Manuela was very weak. Gemma didn’t hesitate. She drove to Mas Torrencito as fast as she could, with Shiva in the back seat, strangely calm, as if she also understood the urgency of the moment.
When Gemma arrived, she found Manuela resting in her corner of the garden, surrounded by Miguel, Mireia, and the doggy family. Masto, Maky, Mastitwo, Mamas, Mastiff, and Markos were nearby, as if they all knew something special was about to happen. Gemma knelt down next to Manuela, stroking her gently. “Thank you for everything, my girl,” she whispered to her, tears rolling down her face. Shiva, who never left Manuela’s side in her final days, lay down beside her, letting out a soft sigh.
Manuela, with her last effort, wagged her tail slightly, as if to say, “Everything is fine.” She closed her eyes surrounded by love, leaving an emptiness that can never be completely filled.
An eternal legacy. Manuela, Gemma and Shiva
For Gemma, the pain of losing Manuela was immense, but she was also filled with gratitude. Although they only shared three years, those moments together marked her life forever. Manuela was not simply a dog; she was a beacon of love and comfort in a world that often lacks both.
Today, Gemma and Shiva continue to visit Mas Torrencito, where Manuela’s spirit lives on in every corner. For Gemma, each visit is a reminder of what unconditional love means. Every time she feels the breeze in the garden or hears the barking of other dogs, she can imagine Manuela, her beloved Golden, looking at her with those eyes full of wisdom and eternal love.
Manuela will always live in the hearts of those who knew her, but especially in the heart of Gemma, who had the privilege of accompanying her in the last years of her life, giving her back a part of the infinite love that she always knew how to give.
From Mas Torrencito we wish you a good day and that your dog accompanies you !!!!
