It was a morning like so many others in Mas Torrencito, although for me, Manuela, that day had a different aroma, as if the wind brought with it a silent farewell.

I didn’t know then what the day held, but I felt a special heartbeat in the air. The last walk in Mas Torrencito

In the afternoon, they arrived: regular customers who were almost family. They got out of the car and, next to them, an older Golden Retriever, Cloe, who walked slowly, with that leisurely pace that I also knew so well. We greeted each other with the usual joy, but something in her human’s eyes made me stop. There was sadness, yes, but also a kind of peace, as if she had made a difficult but necessary decision.

Chloe and I understood each other without words, as dogs do. We looked at each other and in that instant I knew what was happening. She had come to say goodbye. Her human, with a broken voice, explained to Miguel what was going on:

-Chloe is not well… The vet told us it’s only a matter of days. I couldn’t let her last walk be somewhere else. This is her place, where she has been happiest.

Miguel nodded silently, with a lump in his throat. No more words were said, because there was no need for them.

El ultimo dia de loe en mastorrencito... La despedida.

The perfect day. The last walk in Mas Torrencito

Despite her tiredness, Chloe seemed to have renewed energy. She lay on the terrace in the sunshine, enjoying the warmth as the other dogs approached to greet her with respect. There was something about her, a serene dignity, that commanded even the most mischievous puppies.

In the afternoon, we took a walk together. Chloe and I walked along the paths we knew so well, among the trees and fields that smelled of life. Even though I am a grandmother now, I felt like a puppy again that day, wanting to keep her company and let her know she was not alone.

Chloe walked slowly, sniffing every leaf and flower as if she wanted to carry them in her memory. Her human walked behind her, without hurrying her, letting her enjoy every step. From time to time, he would bend down to caress her and whisper something only she understood.

When we returned to Mas, Chloe lay in her favorite corner by the fireplace while we enjoyed a delicious dinner. Her human tucked her in with a soft blanket and, although her breathing was slow, she kept watching us with those eyes full of love and gratitude.

The quiet night

When night fell, Cloe settled down next to her human, while the rest of us dogs stayed close, as if forming a protective circle. There was no crying or wailing, just a calm that seemed to envelop everything.

Late in the evening, when the house was silent, I felt that something had changed. I approached Chloe, gave her a little nudge with my nuzzle and understood that she had left, calm, at peace and surrounded by her world.

His human woke up soon after and, upon realizing it, he embraced her with tears in his eyes, but also with a sad smile. Miguel and I were there, accompanying him in that intimate moment. Nobody said anything; there was no need.

The farewell. The last walk in Mas Torrencito

The next day, we buried Chloe in a special corner of the Mas, under a tree that gave the coolest shade in summer. Her human wanted to leave her a yellow flower, just like the ones I always wear in my ear. Before leaving, she looked at me and said:

-Thank you, Manuela. Thank you for accompanying her.

And I, in my own way, responded with a soft bark and a look that said: Here will always be your home.

Sometimes I think that Chloe had the luck we all wish for: to say goodbye in the place we love the most, surrounded by those who understand and love us. That night, while I was resting, I felt something strange, as if a whisper was calling me from afar. And, although I am still here, I know that when my time comes, I will also want it to be in Mas Torrencito, with Miguel, the dogs and this paradise that will always be my home.

The last goodbye.

Chloe is no longer physically here, but I believe that part of her is still in every corner of Mas. Every time the wind moves the leaves or a ray of sunshine illuminates the path, I feel her presence, calm and happy. Because here, between barks, laughter and love, goodbyes are never really goodbyes.

From Mas Torrencito we wish you a good day and that your dog accompanies you !!!!
