The unexpected tourists
As we tried to calm Lourdes over Lolo’s disappearance and the murmurings among the customers began to intensify, the front desk phone rang. We all turned our heads towards the device, which seemed to ring with unusual urgency. At Mas Torrencito, we rarely receive calls this late.
– Who will it be now? – I muttered, as I answered.
– Hello! Uh… what’s it called? oh yes Good evening ! said a voice with a strong English accent and a hurried tone.
– Hey… Hello! Good evening ! I replied, quickly adjusting to the half-rusty English I had learned at school.
—Yes, yes… um… We are lost. Very lost. We’re in the middle of… fog… so much fog! And we need a place to stay… we saw your sign on the road but… can’t find you! – the voice sounded between amused and a little desperate.
Upon hearing that, Mireia and some customers began to laugh quietly, although Lourdes was still frowning, clearly worried about Lolo.
– Don’t worry! I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt. Eh… I mean, don’t worry! We’ll guide you! .
I quickly gave them directions, although I wasn’t sure they followed them completely, because at some point in the conversation one of the tourists exclaimed that “the fog was like a monster from a horror movie”. Finally, after several attempts, they understood the way, or so it seemed, and I said goodbye with a lively “See you soon!”.
The arrival of the guiris . The Mystery of Smells and Apparitions at Mas Torrencito
About twenty minutes passed, and just as the customers were starting to disperse to their rooms, we heard a couple of timid knocks on the door. Opening it, I came face to face with two figures who looked like they’d stepped out of an indie music festival: one blond with a bushy beard and a woven scarf that looked like a giant necklace, and the other a girl redhead with a giant smile and a camera hanging around her neck, as if she was ready to photograph every corner of the house.
– Hello! – they both greeted, and then they started to laugh and greet the dogs, who immediately approached, smelling the suitcases.
—Hello! We are… eh… very… eh… sorry! Thank you so much for helping us! said the girl, who later introduced herself as Lucy, as the blond, who they called Oliver, nodded and bent down to pet Mastitwo.
We quickly show them to a room and offer them some hot coffee. The couple settled into the lounge next to some customers who were still there, and the atmosphere began to relax. With charming naturalness, Lucy and Oliver began recounting anecdotes of their trip through northern Spain, recounting how they had gotten lost in the fog in a story involving a map that they said looked like it had been drawn by a child from five years
Isa and Vicent, who were still in the chill out, laughed out loud with the story of the guiris, and it didn’t take long to start a conversation with them.
— Oh, it’s like a… what’s it called? A… haunted farmhouse? Oliver asked in his rudimentary Spanish, causing several customers to burst into laughter.
– So it seems! I answered, laughing and, for a moment, forgetting the tension of the missing cat and the mysterious shadows.
The calm after the storm . The Mystery of Smells and Apparitions at Mas Torrencito (Part 2)
The new guests were like a breath of fresh air. Lucy turned out to be an animal lover, and quickly integrated with the dogs and cats, becoming a four-legged friend within minutes. Oliver, on the other hand, was an expert at telling exaggerated stories, and within minutes he had everyone in the living room laughing as he described an alleged “epic battle” he had waged against a stray cat in a village in Portugal.
Even Lourdes, still worried about Lolo, couldn’t help but laugh when Oliver started imitating the antics of the “ferocious cat” who, according to him, had tried to “attack” him in the middle of the street. And so, little by little, the atmosphere relaxed and the tension in the house decreased. Even the dogs, who had been restless until a moment ago, curled up next to Lucy, as if they knew they were in good company.
The couple was so at ease that they decided to stay in the chill out, where they settled on one of the sofas with a blanket and started watching “Pasapalabra” with the other customers, commenting on the words as if they knew perfectly what the program was about. The fog outside, which had seemed terrifying before, now felt like a cozy blanket that isolated us from the rest of the world.
Mireia approached me and smiled.
-Miguel, these guiris arrived just in time. I don’t know why, but I feel like we needed his good energy tonight.
I nodded, looking at the customers and their pets, all together in a strange but pleasant kind of peace. For a moment, I thought the night had decided to give us a break.
An unexpected discovery .
Just when we all seemed to relax and the atmosphere became warm again, a peculiar sound broke the silence. It was a high-pitched, soft bark coming from… from behind the couch!
Lourdes jumped up, and before she could say anything, Lolo, her little yorkshire terrier, appeared with an expression as calm as ever, as if he had been there all along, hidden in a secret hideout With that characteristic Yorkshire attitude, Lolo came up to his owner wagging his tail and giving her a look that seemed to say, “What are they worried about?”
– Lolo! Lourdes exclaimed, hugging and caressing him as she checked him to make sure he was okay. Where have you been, murri?!
The customers and we were relieved to see that little Lolo had appeared safe and sound, and Oliver, unable to help himself, began to joke, suggesting that Lolo might be “the real guardian of Mas Torrencito, with a spy uniform and all”. He even posed next to Lolo for a photo, while Lucy laughed and captured the moment on her camera.
Back to normal?
And when it seemed that everything was back to normal, a detail left me intrigued. Looking behind the sofa to see Lolo’s hiding place, I noticed something strange on the floor. They looked like…prints? Yes, some small wet prints, clearly from a dog, that ran from the entrance to the back of the couch. However, there was something strange about it, as if there were bigger ones on top of each other.
I tried to ignore it, but the bewilderment was impossible to avoid. How could such a small dog leave marks of this shape and size?
Mireia also noticed them, and we looked at each other without knowing much what to think. For a moment, I almost dared to ask Lourdes if Lolo had been acting strange, but I decided not to scare her. However, as we headed back to the chill out, a question settled in my mind and I couldn’t help it:
Was there something or someone else at Mas Torrencito that night?
