Studies agree on which dogs are more likely to die sooner. Which dogs live the shortest?
Society has more than assumed the idea that large animals tend to live longer than small ones. The same is often true for pets. We see it as natural that our fish or our hamster will die before our cat or our dog. This is probably why we are more likely to choose one of these felines or a ‘mutt’ as a companion animal. The thought of losing our pet causes us dread, so we generally choose to welcome into our home one that tends to live for many years.
Among dogs, there are also some that live longer than others. And this cliché of small and large animals does not hold true in this case. If you want to know which dog breeds have the shortest life expectancy, read on.
Small dogs tend to live longer
Studies agree: smaller dogs, as a general rule, tend to have a longer life expectancy than the rest. According to the Royal Veterinary College’s ‘VetCompass’ project, which has analyzed data from more than 30,000 dogs that died between 2016 and 2020 in the UK, an average dog usually lives about 11 years. Contrary to what many might think, it is the smaller dogs that are above this figure. The Lancashire Heeler (15.4 years), Tibetan Spaniel (15.2 years) and mini Dachshund (14 years) are the longest-lived breeds.
At the other end of the scale are those dogs with a shorter life expectancy. This is the case of the French Bulldog, an immensely popular breed but not usually in good health due to its physical shape. This causes most of them to die before the age of five. Other dogs that tend to die early are the English Bulldog (7.39 years) and the Pug (7.65 years). In all these cases the artificial origin of the breeds, arising from genetic crosses forced by humans to build a new dog phenotype, is the cause of premature cardiovascular diseases and greater susceptibility to chronic diseases in these animals.
