Because, let’s face it, we all know how this movie ends. We all do. No matter how much success we accumulate, how much noise we make or how much we try to ignore the subject, the end is immovable. Yes, friends: sooner or later, we all end up in a wooden box, transformed into ashes or with an “eternal chalet” with a view, let’s say… not very panoramic. Because, of course, the underworld is not famous for its decoration. Hahahaha… ALL of them, without exception.
Of course, the road to that final destination varies greatly. Some will have lived with more sorrow than glory, as secondary in their own lives; others, with more glory than sorrow, leaving a trail of applause behind them. There are those who pass by quietly, like a gentle breeze, and those who arrive like a hurricane, causing a scandal wherever they go. But let’s not fool ourselves, because no matter how different the route, we all end up in the same place. ALL OF US.
And when we get there, what’s left of us? Well, that also depends. Some will be remembered fondly, with anecdotes that bring smiles; others will be mourned, with tears that never seem to end. And others… well, simply forgotten. Like that sock that disappears in the washing machine: no one knows where it went, or spends much time thinking about it. But, despite these differences, the outcome is always the same. The same finish line.
Now, let’s pause and talk about our beloved dogs. Because they, oh, they are another story. While we spend half our lives on banal things and the other half on worrying about those same banalities, they know exactly what matters. They, unlike us, will ALWAYS be remembered, mourned, missed. And yes, when they go, they leave us with a void that no amount of therapy, new couch, or pound of ice cream can fill.
And why do they mark us so much? Because they give their all. EVERYTHING. They are faithful to the core. They don’t need explanations or complicated reasons to love us. They look at us as if we were the very reason for their existence, and, in a way, we are. They live for us, for us, with a devotion that we, the “rational” ones, can hardly understand. THEY DO KNOW HOW TO LIVE.
And meanwhile, we complicate our lives. What if the likes on Instagram, what if the number of followers, what if the absurd fights, what if the fears we invent. 50% of our life is spent on bullshit, and the other 50%, probably, on regretting the bullshit we did. A masterpiece of human stupidity, don’t you think?
But they are not. They are here for the bottom line: to make us feel good. Some, of course, with more mischief than others (and with the receipt of bitten shoes as witness). Others, quieter, becoming a sort of silent therapist. And then there are the intense ones, those who seem to have an infinite battery and force you to go out to the park even if you just want to sink into the couch. But all of them, absolutely all of them, know how to enjoy their short life as if every second were a gift.
Because for them, it is. They don’t worry about tomorrow or “what will they say”. They live in the present in a way that should put us to shame. We, the supposedly intelligent, get lost in our own nonsense. They, on the other hand, teach us what it means to really live.
So, maybe we should learn something from them. Not only look at them with tenderness, but imitate their simple and honest philosophy. Sometimes, the most complicated thing is not getting to the end; it’s learning to enjoy the journey. What do you think? Do you want to live with less noise and more barking? 🐾
