Working in rural tourism has its good things: the contact with nature, the silence… But there are also the weird people. The guest, the little dog and the evil spirits of MasTorrencito
No, not curious or eccentric people, but people who seem to have come straight out of another astral plane. Like that girl who came the other day with her winemaker and a load of oddities.
I knew it didn’t look good from the initial whats. Phrases like: “Do you accept puppies? But mine is very energetically sensitive…” or “Are the rooms purified? I’m a little particular about that” had already given me an idea that this would be fun. And boy, was it fun.
She arrives. She, the little dog and a suitcase that looked like she was carrying the trousseau of a queen. Before she even says hello, she lets me go:
-Is that you?
-I don’t know whether to respond like a human or to imitate a dog. -I didn’t know whether to respond like a human or imitate a dog, because the winemaker was already measuring my calf as if it were his next lunch.
I show him three rooms to choose from, thinking it would be quick. ha! He enters the first one, and stands still on the threshold. He closes his eyes, stretches out his hands and… starts sniffing the air. SNIFF! Like looking for radon gas or the secret recipe for Coca-Cola.
In and out. Sniffs. Stretches out his hands. Sighs. And me there, with the most intense poker face of my life.
-Hey, no hurry, huh? You choose and let me know. -I tell him with a smile that I ached to keep.
-Yes, yes, thank you. This is important.
After fifteen minutes of rituals, he tells me in a solemn voice:
-Room 5. I think they are quieter there.
-Who?
-Theevil spirits.
I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing. I nodded as seriously as I could (I owe my Oscar to that moment), and went to the kitchen to tell Mireia.
-Another weird one, Mireia. Another one.
-Another one? -Really?
-He says there are bad spirits. He has left the window and door open for them to leave.
-Well, I’ll say good night to them too.
We go about our business, until I get a whatsapp. “Could you bring me up an extra blanket? It’s just that the energy in the room has left me cold.” Cold room, I don’t know if it’s because of the spirits or the open window with two degrees in the air.
I go upstairs with the blanket. I knock on the door. The winemaker tries to eat me again. She opens it and I see the scene: candles lit everywhere, the window wide open and the heating running as if we were in Siberia.
-Do you have the heat on? -I ask gently.
-Of course.
-And the open window?
-Things of mine.
-Yours, but I’m paying? -I spit at him with a tense smile.
-How?
-If you leave the window open, the heating will not stop all night.
-Well, well, when it airs, I’ll close it.
-Perfect. Perfect. -I say, squeezing the blanket like a punching bag.
I go downstairs and tell Mireia.
-Mireia, you have turned the heating on full blast, with the window open.
-Leave her alone. If she wants to do a Viking ritual, that’s her problem.
After a while, the girl goes for a walk with the puppy. I take advantage of the situation and run up to the room. I open the door, and it looks like an industrial refrigerator. Cold, candles, and the window open as if to summon Jack the Ripper. I decide to take the control of the air conditioning, lest the spirit of heating decided to add the polar air.
When he comes back, he sees me and says:
-Hey… Have you noticed something in the room?
-Something?
-Yes, something… strange.
-Yes, I have. -I tell him, “Very cold. Could it be the spirit of winter?
She smiles, convinced that the joke was for real. Mireia and I spent the rest of the night giggling like teenagers at camp. And yes, the next morning, she asked me for incense for the breakfast room – but that’s another story!
From MasTorrencito we wish you a good day and that your dogs accompany you !!!!
