Story of Dana and the Rage of a Forgotten Village

What if we had heeded the warnings? And if we had listened to the professionals, the experts who have spent years shouting from their offices, from their reports that this disaster was there, lurking in every drop of accumulated rain, in every forgotten talveg? What if, for once, we had professional leaders, with the courage to make uncomfortable decisions and not a band of inepts playing parlor politics?

I watch the news, and anger burns in my throat. I am no longer surprised by the death toll that grows every hour, but it breaks my soul to think that there could have been less. That there was a chance to avoid this, or at least to save the lives that today add names to the tragedy. I have no family in the Valencian Community, nor friends there, but it’s the helplessness, the heartbreak of knowing that, once again, arrogance and contempt for the common good have once again exacted an unbearable price. Anger turns into a knot in my stomach as I feel that this disaster is not only the fault of the storm, but of the chain of absurd decisions, of negligence wrapped in flags and empty promises.

The UME, they say! The Military Emergency Unit was relegated to make way for the fair of the bulls! To the bulls, as if in a rush of blood and sand the lives of those who are now drowning in the mud would be solved! How did we get to this? How can a leader refuse to see the catastrophe, even if the water already covers his boots? While the water denies homes and drowns dreams, he continues there, minimizing, rejecting help from other territories, as if it were a matter of pride and not an emergency where every minute counts, where every hand counts.

Where are the priorities?

The league, the grand prize, the official acts, the protocol… is that what matters? How can it not even be discussed that the shows be suspended, that football be postponed, that the circus be stopped, when tragedy covers us with its shadow? There is no room for entertainment when there are entire families who will never see their loved ones again. To hell with the bulls, to hell with the pennants! This is a crisis, a reality where less show and more seriousness is needed.

And while we remain mired in the mud, in despair, who will be held accountable? Who will give us explanations when all this happens and only the echo of broken promises remains? Because today, stones, mud and insults are raining down on them, and I don’t know if that is enough. How long will we endure this chain of negligence? How long will we let an elite of useless people decide for us and play with our lives?

What if it was different? What if one day, climate change was not a line of propaganda, but a reality that we faced with the urgency it deserves? Or will we sit idly by, watching the water rise and rise, until one day it covers us all?
